Why politicians promote affordability ignoring the economic drivers of inflation …
Unfortunately, most politicians are economically managerially challenged getting elected on intentions versus presenting to voter's actual economic drivers of the inflation reality in play
We’re constantly being told by our leadership that everything is unaffordable.
We’re told we need affordable housing, groceries, gas prices, and healthcare.
Yet, we’re not presented with explanations as to why these are not affordable other than citing inflationary pressures.
Essentially, politicians are totally focused on poll driven intentions primarily focused on existing folklore, political ideologies, intentions and in many cases, religious beliefs.
All of these, however, are not based on the economic realities that are facing us today.
As an economic management professional, I suggest public policy be based on what is termed as ‘demonstrated reproducible results based on a preponderance of evidence’.
Suggest my post: Why you should know what an 'economic management' professional is all about
Sustainability economists have for some time been advising us that we’re using resources beyond their long-term availability. Their motivation for this is the subject of my Substack blog: sustainable prosperity.
And what exactly is sustainable prosperity? It’s the concept of maintaining a lifestyle consistent with the natural environment we live in. In other words, living with the consumption of resources that are renewable and thus sustainable.
The current economic paradigm being presented by 19th century economists is ‘limitlessness’ founded on the economic concept of ‘substitution’ where any ‘scarce’ resource can be ‘substituted’ for by another resource, usually unnamed, forever.
Economics is based on the premise of scarcity recognizing what economists and management professionals call the short term (next quarter, next year) and long term (over a longer period of time from decades to centuries).
This gives the idea that our current strategy for economic growth will get ourselves out of our problems as the long-term solution versus the reality of ignoring the economic drivers of inflation and hiding this relationship with ‘affordability’ intentions recitals.
I have presented in a previous post explaining inflation and why politicians aren’t in control of same:
Why politicians don't control inflation in a market economy ...
In any event, its vital we consider the underlying economic drivers that are raising prices as to plan our future using that I term as ‘rational governance’ where voters are informed with management strategies that address the cost drivers creating the observable outcomes reported in our news media.
The public must understand their role in our problems in order to change behaviors that will lead to sustainable solutions.
My Substack blog is here for readers to ‘ponder’ my comments as this post is not meant to be extensive discussion but rather a brief introduction on the topic presented.
